pumpkin thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is arguably the greatest American holiday. There are so many traditions, centered around family, and focused on being thankful...oh, and eating. How great is this!?! I absolutely love Thanksgiving.

For my entire life, my family has gathered at my grandparents' house to celebrate. For me, Thanksgiving is an opportunity to see family we don't get to see very often, since we live hours away. As I've gotten older, and my grandparents are becoming elderly, I find myself more appreciative for each Thanksgiving I get to celebrate with them.

And, since I've been married, I've been blessed to celebrate two Thanksgivings in the same day—double the blessings! We always have a great time with my wife's family. For us, Thanksgiving Day is just a loud, festive and, enjoyable time.

In recent years, another theme dominates my thoughts on Thanksgiving. Are we, as a nation, remembering the One to whom we should be giving thanks? Don't misunderstand me; we should be thankful for our family, friends, jobs, food, country and military, but it is GOD that deserves our thankfulness for each blessing. Be honest: in your Thanksgiving Day activities, do you pause and actually give thanks? I hope so. I would imagine most people who read this do.

The Bible is clear as to the source of our blessings.

16 Don’t be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters. 17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.
(Jam. 1:16-17 NIV)

Like any good father, GOD loves to bless His children. And, like any parent, He simply wants His children to be thankful and recognize that it is He who blessed them. He isn't egotistical or insecure. Rather, GOD wants us to express thankfulness because it is what is best for us. If we fail to be thankful, we become prideful and self-centered, and that isn't good for anyone.

So enjoy your Thanksgiving Day, and remember the One to whom you owe your thanks. Happy Thanksgiving and GOD bless.
