What would you say if somebody asked you, "Why do you believe in GOD?"
Here are my top 10 reasons why I believe GOD exists.
1. Design Implies a Designer
When I look around at nature, everything from the way my hand functions as my brain signals it to open and close, to the way an ant gathers its food for winter, to the way the earth is perfectly positioned in proximity to the sun so as to enable life and the changing of seasons, it all exhibits complex and sophisticated design.
I have observed that anything which has been designed is the result of someone who designed it. Thus, I believe GOD designed and created the universe.
2. The Bible's Creation Account Seems Most Plausible
Of all of the theories as to how the universe began, the Bible's account of creation seems to me to be the most plausible. Quite frankly, all other theories which remove a creator from the mix seem downright silly. I have never seen any object or person which began on its own.
3. Consistency of Math, Science, Laws of Nature
Closely related to the first observation above is the fact that the precision of math, science, weather patterns and laws of nature such as gravity shows a clear order to the way "stuff works."
Without someone holding all of this together, it seems to me that there would be no consistency and order to life. Chaos and inconsistency would reign until everything fell apart. How often do completely random and chance events fall perfectly into place anyway?
4. Inherent Human Understanding of "Fairness"
From an early age, young children will argue that something is or is not "fair." I believe this is not a learned behavior, but a built-in feeling we all have that gauges when we or someone else has been "wronged."
Where do these feelings come from? I believe they are an indication that we have been designed—created for the purpose of administering justice and fairness to the best of our ability. This built-in barometer of equality and right-wrong is GOD-given.
5. Human Fascination With Life Beyond What We See
Humans know of birth, life and death. We know it because we experience it firsthand and because we watch others experience it every day.
Yet, we also have a fascination with the possibility of life beyond what we see and experience here on earth.
I believe this manifests itself in numerous ways, from a belief in an after-life—heaven and hell—deceased loved ones "watching over us" or "looking down on us," to aliens, ghosts, spirits and even time travel.
Eccl. 3:11 tells us that GOD has placed eternity in the heart of the human. I believe all of these "feelings" people have regarding life beyond our own are manifestations of this truth.
6. Only the Bible Offers Satisfying Answers to Life's Most Important Questions
Where did I come from? Why am I here? What am I supposed to do? What happens to me after I die?
Outside of the answers provided in the Bible, humans are left to wonder or to discover what they believe to be the answers to these questions, all the while without ever knowing if they really know the truth.
7. Only the Bible Gives Me a Purpose Worth Living (and Dying) For
Life without purpose is no life at all.
In Jesus, Christians are free to struggle instead of struggling to be free, and the Bible gives our life meaning and purpose. While GOD may not speak audibly to us individually and tell us exactly what He wants us to do every step of our life, He gives us principles which guide our decisions and aids us when we pray.
8. The Bible is Unlike Any Other Book
I've read a lot of ancient literature, including other writings from the same time period as some biblical writings, and there is no comparison between any of them and the writings of the Bible.
The Bible is indisputably more complex than any group of humans could have perfected without supernatural influence. Written over the span of about 1,500 years, with over forty writers, there is complete harmony between them.
All of the writings speak of a common theme, telling a consistent story of the history of GOD's interactions with humanity, and of a Savior who would restore the broken relationship between humans and their Creator, Sustainer and Judge. All of the text reads like a single author.
No such project or group of writings could withstand the scrutiny and battery of study, debate, attacks and hatred as the Bible has done, unless it was from GOD.
9. People Who Live By Biblical Principles Exhibit the Character I'm Striving to Develop
There will always be hypocrites and pretenders, to be sure, but a person who strives to live by the teachings of the Bible and specifically that of Jesus Christ consistently displays the type of character and reputation that I want to have. This truth is strong evidence for the existence of GOD because, consistently, these teachings guide and shape men and women into better people, citizens, fathers, mothers, teachers, government officials, rulers, judges, and on and on.
10. No One Has Found the Bones of Jesus of Nazareth
Besides the evidence from looking at the world around us, the most significant testimony to GOD's existence, in my opinion, is the fact that no one has found a grave with the bones of Jesus of Nazareth.
Secular history testifies to Jesus' life on earth and his death by crucifixion. Yet, as the Bible records, despite humanity's best efforts to keep Jesus from rising from the grave, He did and therefore we do not have His bones with us today.
