Study Romans 8:1-13
***Always give scriptures with answers.
- Who are those "in Christ Jesus?"
- In verses 1-4 how many "laws" are being talked about?
- At what point does the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus set one free from the law of sin and of death?
- What requirement of the law is fulfilled by those who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit?
Those who are "in Christ Jesus" are those who have been baptized into the likeness of His death, according to Rom. 6:3-4.
3 Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.
(Rom. 6:3-4 NIV)
Likewise, Gal. 3 says:
26 So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, 27 for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.
(Gal. 3:26-29 NIV)
Finally, Col. 2 says:
9 For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, 10 and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head over every power and authority. 11 In him you were also circumcised with a circumcision not performed by human hands. Your whole self ruled by the flesh was put off when you were circumcised by Christ, 12 having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through your faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead.
(Col. 2:9-12 NIV)
I believe there are 3 laws discussed in verses 1-4.
1 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, 2 because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh, 4 in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
(Rom. 8:1-4 NIV)
The first "law" is the life-giving law of the Holy Spirit. The second "law" is the principle that the soul who sins shall die (spiritually and therefore physically). The third "law" is the Law of Moses.
Per the Scriptures above, the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus sets one free from the law of sin and of death when they put on Christ—when the believer is washed clean of their sins, being raised to walk in newness of life.
One must be righteous in order to inherit the promised blessings of the Law and have a relationship with GOD.
