The Law of Moses forbid incest and unhealthy sexual relationships with close family members.

Explanation

The Law of Moses provided the following restrictions against sexual relations with close relatives.

(As you read these, remember that we previously established that, biblically, “shame” means the natural human embarrassment one feels by the realization of their public nakedness.)

Violating Parents

6 “‘A person a person will not come in unto any family member of his flesh to uncover shame; I am the Lord. 7 You shall not uncover the shame of your father and the shame of your mother; for she is your mother, and you shall not uncover her shame. 8 You shall not uncover the shame of the wife of your father; it is the shame of your father.

Penalty for Violating Parents

11 The man who lies with his father’s wife has uncovered his father’s nakedness; both shall surely be put to death, for they are guilty.

Violating Sister

9 The shame of your sister from your father or your mother born in the household or outside, you will not uncover her shame.11 You shall not uncover the shame of the daughter of your father’s wife; she is your sister by the same father. You shall not uncover her shame.

Penalty for Violating Sister

17 Whoever may take his sister from his father’s side or from his mother’s side and so see her shame, and she sees his shame, it is disgraceful; they will be utterly destroyed in the presence of the members of their relatives. He has uncovered the shame of his sister; they have incurred guilt.

Violating Granddaughter

10 The shame of the daughter of your son or of the daughter of your daughter, you will not uncover their shame, because it is your shame.

12 You shall not uncover the shame of the sister of your father, for she is a near relative of your father. 13 You will not uncover the shame of the sister of your mother, for she is a near relative of your mother. 14 You will not uncover the shame of the brother of your father, and you shall not enter into his wife, for she is your close relative.

19 And you will not uncover the shame of the sister of your father or of the sister of your mother, for she has uncovered kin; they will bear guilt. 20 Whoever may lie with his female relative, he has uncovered the shame of his female relative; they will die childless.

15 You will not uncover the shame of your daughter-in-law, for she is the wife of your son; you will not uncover her shame.

No Sexual Relations with a Mother and Daughter

17 You will not uncover the shame of a woman and her daughter. You will not take the daughter of her son and the daughter of her daughter to uncover their shame, for they are your near relatives; it is an impious act.
