Biblical Principle #237: King Not to Amass Horses, Wives, Wealth

Biblical Principles List

Under the Law of Moses, God forewarned Israel’s future kings not to amass horses, wives, and gold or silver.

Knowing Israel would eventually desire a man to rule over them like the Gentile nations, GOD forewarned these Israelite kings in the Law, saying:

16 Wherefore he shall not multiply a cavalry for himself, nor cause the people to return to Egypt; for the Lord said to you, ‘You shall not return that way again.’ 17 Neither shall he multiply wives for himself, lest his heart be changed; nor shall he greatly multiply silver and gold for himself.

Deuteronomy 17:16-17 OSB

GOD knew that these things would turn away the king’s heart from trusting in GOD.

  1. Great numbers of horses could lead to trusting in one’s own military strength or alliances with other nations.
  2. Many wives could increase the probability of family problems, idolatry, and even witchcraft.
  3. Increased wealth often leads to a false sense of security and trust in one’s own resources. It also makes you a large target for attack, and it can tempt the king to not depend upon GOD for all things.
