Biblical Principle #285: Israelite Prostitution Forbidden

Biblical Principles List

Principle

The Law of Moses forbid prostitution, including prostitution associated with idolatry.

Explanation

Parents were forbidden from giving their daughters over to a life of prostitution.

29 You shall not profane your daughter to prostitute her; so the land shall not go a whoring, and the land be filled with iniquity.

Leviticus 19:29 Brenton Septuagint Third Revised Edition

The Law of Moses also forbid shrine prostitution:

17 There shall not be a harlot of the daughters of Israel, and there shall not be a fornicator of the sons of Israel; there shall not be an idolatress of the daughters of Israel, and there shall not be an initiated person of the sons of Israel. 18 You shall not bring the hire of a harlot, nor the price of a dog into the house of the Lord your God, for any vow; because even both are an abomination to the Lord your God.

Deuteronomy 23:17-18 Brenton Septuagint Third Revised Edition

According to these texts, GOD saw prostitution and fornication as the proverbial slippery slope that would ultimately corrupt and destroy the land.
