Is Jesus God?

Is Jesus God?

Having considered the evidence, I say, emphatically, yes!

Belief that Jesus is fully GOD and fully man is the cornerstone principle of the Christian faith.

A person is wise to investigate the evidence regarding Jesus. For, if Jesus really is who the eyewitnesses claim, then we best give heed to His words.

The most foolish of all fools is the person who hears about Jesus but doesn’t investigate His claims.

That Jesus was a real historical person is undeniable. He is mentioned in multiple writings other than the Scriptures.

Likewise, there is significant historical evidence outside the Bible that Jesus was crucified.

And despite the best efforts of the first century Jewish religious leaders with the aid of the Roman Empire, no bones of Jesus have ever been found.

Jesus’ closest friend, the apostle John, wrote these words about Him:

14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

15 (John testified concerning him. He cried out, saying, “This is the one I spoke about when I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’”) 16 Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given. 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.
(John 1:14-18 NIV)

In verse 18, where the NIV translation reads, “the one and only Son,” the Greek actually reads, “the only-begotten God.” Jesus is the only God to have ever been born as a human. Regarding this, the writer of Hebrews says:

5 Therefore, when Christ came into the world, he said:

“Sacrifice and offering you did not desire,
but a body you prepared for me;
6 with burnt offerings and sin offerings
you were not pleased.
7 Then I said, ‘Here I am—it is written about me in the scroll—
I have come to do your will, my God.’”
(Heb. 10:5-7 NIV)

Here, the passage which the writer claims Jesus attributed to Himself is Psalm 40:6-8 (LXX):

Sacrifice and offering You did not will;
But a body You prepared for me;
A whole burnt offering and a sin offering You did not require.”
Then I said, “Behold, I come
(it is written of me in the volume of the book);
I willed to do Your will, O my God,
And Your law in the midst of my heart.”

Later, as Jesus stood trial before the Jewish religious leaders, it was His claim to be GOD that brought upon Him the charge of blasphemy and led to His crucifixion.

66 At daybreak the council of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and the teachers of the law, met together, and Jesus was led before them. 67 “If you are the Messiah,” they said, “tell us.”

Jesus answered, “If I tell you, you will not believe me, 68 and if I asked you, you would not answer. 69 But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God.”

70 They all asked, “Are you then the Son of God?”

He replied, “You say that I am.”

71 Then they said, “Why do we need any more testimony? We have heard it from his own lips.”
(Luke 22:66-71 NIV)

If we honestly consider the evidence for Jesus, it is quite powerful:

  • The non-Christian (and often anti-Christian) authorities who attest to Jesus’ existence.
  • The anti-Christian Jewish writings about Jesus.
  • Josephus’ writings from the first century.
  • The early Christian writings.
  • The numerous fulfilled prophecies about Jesus from the Old Testament Scriptures.
  • The eyewitness gospel writers who attest (in full agreement) to the miracles they saw Jesus perform.
  • The absence of His bones.

Yes, I am fully convinced that Jesus Christ is the Son of GOD.
