Biblical Principle #55: God Destroyed the Ancient World with a Flood

Biblical Principles List

Principle

God destroyed the ancient world with a flood.

Explanation

The Bible asserts that, because of the great wickedness and corruption that was on the earth, GOD destroyed the ancient world with a flood.

5 Then the Lord God saw man’s wickedness, that it was great in the earth, and every intent of the thoughts within his heart was only evil continually. 6 So God was grieved that He had made man on the earth, and He thought this over. 7 Then God said, “I will blot out man whom I created from the face of the earth, from man to cattle, and from the creeping things to the birds of heaven, for I am grieved I made them.” 8 But Noah found grace in the presence of the Lord God.

11 Now the earth was corrupt before God and filled with unrighteousness. 12 Thus the Lord God looked upon the earth, and indeed it was corrupt; for all flesh corrupted their way on the earth. 13 Then God said to Noah, “The end of all flesh has come before Me, for the earth is filled with unrighteousness through them; and behold, I will destroy them with the earth.

Genesis 6:5-8, 11-13 OSB

The half-angel, half-human Nephilim were significant contributors to the spread of evil and violence, as we have previously established.

Noah and his seven family members were the only righteous people left.

For the better part of a century, Noah executed GOD’s instructions to:

  • Build the ark to GOD’s specifications, and …
  • Collect the animals to onboard.

When everything was prepared, GOD told Noah to load everything into the ark, for within 7 days, the flood would come.

During this period, Noah diligently warned people to repent because of what was coming (see Hebrews 11:7; 2 Peter 2:5). Nobody believed Noah. In fact, Jesus said that life continued just as it had, with people feasting and marrying, right up to the point the flood waters rained down (see Matthew 24:38; Luke 17:26-27).

Noah was 500 years old when his kids were born and 600 years old when he entered the ark. GOD closed Noah and company in the ark (see Genesis 7:16).

It rained for 40 consecutive days and nights. Additionally, the fountains below the seas and the floodgates of heaven were released and water came from every direction.

19 The waters prevailed exceedingly on the earth, and all the high mountains under the whole heaven were covered. 20 The waters prevailed fifteen cubits upward, and covered all the high mountains.

Genesis 7:19-20 OSB

Everything on land that was not in the ark died.

Water prevailed over all land for 150 days, after which, GOD closed up the fountains and stopped the rain from falling, and the waters receded and dry land eventually appeared.

As Noah turned 601 years old—nearly a whole year after the flood began—he and his family carefully exited the ark and descended Mt. Ararat.

The ancient world was no more. The half-angelic Nephilim were eliminated, along with all their corruption.

Humanity could begin afresh.
