Biblical Principle #279: First Year for New Husbands

Biblical Principles List

Principle

Israelite husbands were to stay home and bring happiness to their wife for their first year of marriage.

Explanation

GOD told Moses:

5 “If a man should take a new wife, he shall not go out to war or be charged with any business; he shall be free at home one year and bring happiness to his wife whom he took.

Deuteronomy 24:5 OSB

The Brenton LXX Third Revised Edition makes this passage even more clear:

7 And if anyone should have recently taken a wife, he shall not go to war, neither shall any thing be laid upon him; he shall be free [footnote: guiltless] in his house; for one year he shall cheer his wife whom he has taken.

Deuteronomy 24:7 Brenton LXX Third Revised Edition

What a blessing for a newlywed Israelite couple!

This shows us the heart of GOD, how He originally intended marriage—as an stress-free union of relational joy and sexual … “cheering”—and how He understands how the pressures and stresses of daily life can wreck a marriage before its roots take hold, unless there are protections in place.
