"You Have Heard" is a new series that I am adding to chasingalion.com.
In this series, I will take a passage that I think people (sometimes self included) often fail to follow correctly, and will "remix" that passage as it is commonly implemented today.
My experience has been that this provides a great teaching tool, clearly showing our lapses and stepping on our toes, as needed.
I have had the idea for some time and am just getting around to executing on it.
I first saw this concept over at Alan Knox's site (www.alanknox.net). Alan's series is entitled "Scripture...As We Live It," which I believe is an excellent title.
Whereas Alan focuses primarily upon church gatherings, "You Have Heard" will seek to take a broader approach, selecting Scripture from Genesis to Revelation covering any number of topics.
The title comes from Jesus' sermon on the mount as He repeatedly pointed out the differences between what Scripture said and what the Jews commonly practiced.
So, now that you know the background, here is our first installment of "You Have Heard," which focuses on the classic church giving text of 1 Corinthians 16:1-2:
1 Now about the collection for the Lord’s people: Do what I told the Galatian churches to do. 2 On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with your income tithe and put your offering in the collection plate, saving it up, so that when I come you need to pay the bills, no collections will have to be made.
